All Blacks named for Test against South Africa in Auckland

All Blacks selectors Ian Foster, Jason Ryan and Joe Schmidt have named the team to play South Africa in Auckland, where five players are set to take the field for the first time in 2023.

Brodie Retallick, Mark Telea, Samisoni Taukei’aho and Will Jordan will make their return to the side while uncapped prop Tamaiti Williams has also been selected in the match-day 23.

Should Williams take the field, he will become All Black 1209. Born in Whangarei with roots in Kaeo, the 22-year-old could become just the fifth Northland-born All Black in the last two decades.

“Any Test against South Africa is a special occasion,” said Foster. “There is a lot of respect between the two nations and that usually translates to an epic battle on the field.

“This will be a significant challenge and they are determined to grow after a solid start to the Lipovitan-D Rugby Championship in Argentina last week. It has been four years since they last played South Africa here in New Zealand so that also makes it special.”

Jordie Barrett has been named to play his 50th Test match, lining up in the midfield at Go Media Stadium Mt Smart. The 26-year-old will notch a half-century in the same city where he made his All Blacks debut back in 2017. Two other All Blacks are in line to achieve milestones with lock Scott Barrett named to play his 200th first class game while Caleb Clarke could make his 100th first class appearance as outside back cover.  “The fact that this game sold out over a month ago shows that fans are clearly up for it," added Foster. "I've been told that we're expecting over 31,000 fans which means a lot to us."

All Blacks match day 23 (Test caps in brackets) * debutant  1. Ethan de Groot (14)2. Codie Taylor (77)3. Tyrel Lomax (24)4. Brodie Retallick (100)5. Scott Barrett (59) 6. Shannon Frizell (26)7. Sam Cane (captain – 87)8. Ardie Savea (71)9. Aaron Smith (115)10. Wales v South Africa free TV channel, kick-off time and team line-ups

Wales host world champions South Africa in Cardiff in the final audition before Warren Gatland announces his official Rugby World Cup squad on Monday.

The men in red have played two warm-ups so far: a 20-9 win over in England in Cardiff before Steve Borthwick's side won 19-17 a week later at Twickenham despite being reduced to 12 men at one point.

Gatland has named a much-changed side for the visit of the 'Boks, with a number of players handed one more opportunity to stake their claim on a squad position.

Here's everything you need to know about Wales v South Africa:

What time is Wales v South Africa kick-off?

Wales v South Africa will kick off at 3.15pm local time on Saturday, August 19, at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

It is Wales' last Rugby World Cup warm-up before head coach Gatland announces his final 33-man tournament squad on Monday, while the Springboks have one more warm-up against New Zealand next Friday, August 25, before heading to France.

What TV channel is Wales v South Africa on? What about live streaming?

Wales v South Africa will be broadcast live on Amazon Prime Video, with options in both English and Welsh.

Amazon has the broadcast rights to show every Six Nations team's World Cup warm-ups this summer.

What's the Wales v South Africa team news?

Wales have been forced into making a third change to their team for Saturday's World Cup warm-up clash against South Africa.

Wing Alex Cuthbert, who was due to make his first appearance of the summer Test schedule, misses out because of calf muscle tightness, the Welsh Rugby Union said on Friday. Tom Rogers is promoted from the bench to start, with Gloucester wing Louis Rees-Zammit joining the replacements.

British and Irish Lions backs Liam Williams and Dan Biggar, meanwhile, were withdrawn from the side as a precautionary measure on Thursday. Williams had a tight hamstring with Biggar suffering from back irritation, which meant Test debutant Cai Evans replacing Williams and Sam Costelow taking over from Biggar.

Wales will now field a back division against the world champion Springboks comprising a total of just 39 caps, with scrum-half Kieran Hardy having won 17 of those. He and Johnny Williams make their first Wales appearances of the summer.

As for South Africa, fit-again captain Siya Kolisi returns to the starting line-up after recovering from a serious knee injury, while 390 caps worth of experience up front also includes players such as Steven Kitshoff, Malcolm Marx and Pieter-Steph du Toit.
