Cisco Restructures Corporate Engineering Teams

The moves come as part of an ongoing, company-wide restructuring at Cisco intended to remove $1 billion in operating expenses by the end of the company's fiscal 2012 and make Cisco a more streamlined organization that can make decisions faster.

Cisco's Engineering organization will now include five groups, and those five groups will be supported by five separate groups Cisco is calling its Strategic Technology Groups. The changes were confirmed by Cisco's Karen Tillman, vice president of corporate communications, in a Thursday post to Cisco's corporate blog.

Within Engineering, the new Enterprise Networking Group collapses Cisco's Enterprise Routing, Campus Switching, WaaS and Wireless LAN groups into one unit, along with networking pieces of Cisco's Small Business team. Rob Soderbery, Cisco senior vice president, will lead the group, and Praveen Akkiraju, senior vice president, will continue to lead Cisco's Enterprise Routing and Wireless endeavors.

Cisco's Data Center group will be led by Senior Vice President David Yen, whom Cisco poached from Juniper in May. That group now includes Data Center Switching, Servers and Storage, and Load Balancing.

Cisco recently named Chris Young, a former VMware and RSA executive, its senior vice president for security engineering, the first time Cisco's had an SVP-level executive for security. Young is now heading up Cisco's Security and Government Group, which includes Cisco's Security Technology Group, Global Government Solutions group and Corporate Security Programs business.

Elsewhere, Surya Panditi, Cisco senior vice president, is now in charge of Cisco's Service Provider Networking group, which combines its Service Provider Routing and Service Provider Mobility units. Kelly Ahuja, senior vice president, will continue to lead the Mobility piece.

Finally, Marthin DeBeer now controls the Video and Collaboration Group, which consolidates Cisco's Collaboration and Communications, Telepresence Technology, Service Provider Video Technology and Emerging Technologies groups. Barry O'Sullivan, senior vice president, retains control of the Collaboration and Communications team.

Adjacent to the Engineering teams, Cisco now has five Strategic Technology Groups. They are Cloud and System Management Technology, recently formed and led by Rebecca Jacoby, Cisco SVP and CIO; Engineering, Operations and Systems, led by vice president Joe Wotjal; Network Operating Software Technology Group led by senior vice president Ben Fathi; Silicon and Central Engineering led by vice presidents Bill Swift and Massimo Prati; and Research and Advanced Development, led by senior vice president Joel Bion.

Senior Vice Presidents Padmasree Warrior and Pankaj Patel are still the co-leads for Engineering, according to Tillman.

Reached by CRN Thursday afternoon, Tillman said Cisco isn't announcing any executive departures related to the Engineering changes. Cisco has seen a number of high-profile executive exits this year.


Cisco CTO Leaving As Engineering Exodus Continues

After only 15 months, Cisco's top technologist and cloud executive, Zorawar Biri Singh, is leaving the networking giant in the midst of a major engineering reorganization.

Cisco confirmed to CRN that Singh, Cisco's CTO and senior vice president of Cloud Services and Platforms, is leaving due to the company's evolving engineering strategy.

"Earlier this week, they announced to employees an updated alignment of their engineering teams. They believe these changes will help us simplify their development efforts and accelerate delivery of value for their customers. As a result of these changes, Zorawar Biri Singh will leave Cisco at the end of October," a Cisco spokesperson wrote to CRN in an emailed statement.

Singh is the latest of several Cisco leaders who have departed the company this year; the list includes Cisco's enterprise engineering leader Robert Soderbery; longtime networking visionary Pankaj Patel; and engineer veterans Soni Jiandani, Mario Mazzola, Prem Jaim and Luca Cafiero.

Singh was hired by Cisco on the first day CEO Chuck Robbins took the helm in July 2015, replacing the company's popular CTO, Padmasree Warrior.

His departure comes as Cisco is restructuring its entire 25,000-member engineering team along with Cisco's Intercloud strategy. In August, the network leader also unveiled an internal restructuring plan in an effort to invest in priority areas such as security and Internet of Things that includes the elimination of up to 5,500 positions.

Partners said Cisco's cloud strategy under Singh's leadership wasn't clear and failed to resonate with the channel.

"Frankly, I never understood his cloud strategy," said one top executive from a solution provider and Cisco Gold partner.

Earlier this year, Cisco CTO Zorawar Biri Singh told CRN that the networking giant's future in the data center involves containers.

"When he was talking about containers and his roadmap [at Cisco Live this year] it never really resonated with us," said another top executive from a solution provider on CRN's 2016 Solution Provider 500 list. "Him leaving means there was an architectural or technology difference looking at their roadmap … I'm very interested to see who they pick to replace him."

Cisco said they have yet to refill Singh's position. "As part of this simplification of development efforts, a number of engineering leaders -- who previously reported to Singh -- will now report to David Goeckeler and Rowan Trollope," said Cisco.

Singh is responsible for Cisco's overall technology strategy and the alignment of its architecture and product portfolio. Prior to Cisco, Singh spent two years at HP as senior vice president and general manager for HP Cloud. He was also vice president of IBM's cloud computing business from 2008 to 2011.

Mont Phelps, CEO of NWN, No. 68 on the 2016 CRN Solution Provider 500 list and a Cisco Gold partner, said he still has full confidence in CEO Robbins, and Cisco's future.

"With that tenure, it's just an example that he didn't fit," said Phelps. "At this point there's no reason not to trust Chuck and his view of what it takes to be successful as they transition their business model – he's made a lot of bold moves … Cisco is a large company with a very deep bench."

Die dort genannten Schadenszenarien werden dann für das eigene Unternehmen als unrealistisch eingestuft. Die für die KMU nicht minder gefährlichen Cyber­attacken werden nur selten publiziert.

Aufgrund der fehlenden öffentlichen Meldungen von Sicherheitsvorfällen an Sicherheitsbehörden und wegen der fehlenden Presseberichte fällt es schwer, Fakten und Zahlen zur Risikolage zu erheben. Aber ohne diese Grundlage fällt es schwer, in entsprechende Sicherheitsmaßnahmen zu investieren.

Häufig nähert man sich dem Thema Cyberrisiko anlass- oder eventbezogen, also wenn sich neue Schaden­szenarien wie die weltweite WannaCry-Attacke entwickeln. Häufig wird auch akteursgebunden beleuchtet, wer Angreifer oder Opfer sein kann. Dadurch begrenzt man sich bei dem Thema häufig zu sehr nur auf die Cyberkriminalität. Um dem Thema Cyberrisiko jedoch gerecht zu werden, müssen auch weitere Ursachen hinzugezogen werden.

Die Ursachen sind dabei die Risiken, während finanzielle bzw. nicht finanzielle Verluste die Wirkungen sind. Cyberrisiken werden demnach in zwei Hauptursachen eingeteilt. Auf der einen Seite sind die nicht kriminellen Ursachen und auf der anderen Seite die kriminellen Ursachen zu nennen. Beide Ursachen können dabei in drei Untergruppen unterteilt werden.

Höhere Gewalt

Häufig hat man bei dem Thema Cyberrisiko nur die kriminellen Ursachen vor Augen. Aber auch höhere Gewalt kann zu einem empfindlichen Datenverlust führen oder zumindest die Verfügbarkeit von Daten einschränken, indem Rechenzentren durch Naturkatastrophen wie beispielsweise Überschwemmungen oder Erdbeben zerstört werden. Ebenso sind Stromausfälle denkbar.

Menschliches Versagen/Fehlverhalten

Als Cyberrisiken sind auch unbeabsichtigtes und menschliches Fehlverhalten denkbar. Hierunter könnte das versehentliche Veröffentlichen von sensiblen Informationen fallen. Die Zielsetzung eines physischen Angriffs ist ähnlich dem eines Hacker­angriffs. Dabei wird nicht auf die Tools eines Hackerangriffs zurückgegriffen, sondern durch das physische Eindringen in Unternehmensgebäude das Ziel erreicht. Häufig sind es Mitarbeiter, die vertrauliche Informationen stehlen, da sie bereits den notwendigen Zugang zu den Daten besitzen.

Obwohl die Erpressung aufgrund der eingesetzten Methoden auch als Hacker­angriff gewertet werden könnte, ergibt eine Differenzierung Sinn. Erpressungsfälle durch Kryptotrojaner sind eines der häufigsten Schadenszenarien für kleinere und mittelständische Unternehmen. Außerdem sind auch Erpressungsfälle denkbar, bei denen sensible Daten gestohlen wurden und ein Lösegeld gefordert wird, damit sie nicht veröffentlicht oder weiterverkauft werden.
